The Story of How it Came To Be

Hi there! Anile here, Pure Green Magazine’s proud Design Director. The team has been working very hard on Volume 2 and boy, have we got an amazing issue in store for you – expect some beautiful, inspiring content to head your way in a few short weeks!

The theme of Volume 2 is The Urban Farm: no matter where you live, creating a little space for yourself to grow your own food is not only possible but exciting, fun and incredibly rewarding. As we assembled the issue and dreamt of our own urban farming projects, I came up with a little idea that grew (haha) into a full-fledged concept for our cover.

It started with a simple sketch: a seed packet full of Pure Green goodness. I wanted to convey the feeling that, like any great idea or project (or issue), it all starts as little seeds, waiting to sprout – full of anticipation and promise. I researched vintage seed packets and enjoyed the process of coming up with a feel that was both modern and a throw-back to bygone times – there’s a lot about gardening and farming that is steeped in tradition and I wanted to honour that.

Next, it was time to proceed to the digital stage so I mapped out my sketch in Illustrator, working in grayscale so I could focus on the layout before moving on to colour options. I played with fonts, textures and found some lovely, copyright-free flower engravings from the late 19th Century that I was pleased to be able to incorporate into the design.

Once I had wrapped up the layout, tweaked the text options and worked on some colour variations, it was time to print, revise, print some more, assemble, then hire a handsome, talented photographer (i.e. my husband Christian Mouzard) to capture the cover!

And, finally – the cover: a hint at the ideas, projects and inspiration waiting to grow inside. I hope you like it – and I really, really hope you enjoy Volume 2 of Pure Green Magazine! We’re all so proud of it.
