Homes | Clay Inspiration

TEXT by Celine MacKay | PHOTOGRAPHS by Clay plaster by American Clay is a green finishing material that is pretty high on my list of favourites. I love it. It's a troweled on wall finish that can be very textured or smooth, is available in over a hundred colours and can applied to a variety of substrates. Because it is a hand applied finish, the variety available in the application is pretty varied - I've seen installations that were very modern and sleek, and others still that were more traditional or rustic, such as the home in this feature.

Green Building Material: Clay Plaster

Clay plaster by American Clay is a green finishing material that is pretty high on my list of favourites. You can even mix in crushed mica that gives it a hint of sparkle when the light hits just right. Besides having a unique visual appeal, clay plaster helps control humidity in the home by absorbing excess moisture; it also inhibits mold growth and odor, making it ideal for kitchens, baths and basements. This project, from Hamilton, Ontario, uses clay plaster throughout the home. Applied by the Lime Plaster Co., the home is a pretty illustrious example as to the use of clay plasters. The application here was installed using the 'skip' trowel technique, in which the basecoat is visible in spots to give the finish a textured and rustic appearance. Jonathan and I recently applied plaster in our bedroom and bath - if I had the time to finish up the rooms I would share it with you! Perhaps one day soon! In the meantime, enjoy this project and look into clay plaster for your own home - it's healthy, non-toxic and green.
